Before ordering a custom-made hammock-floor net, it is essential to measure the opening accurately. Precise measurements ensure a net that fits perfectly.
To avoid unpleasant surprises upon delivery (net too small, incorrect tension, etc.), this guide walks you through each step, with best practices to follow and common mistakes to avoid.
Measuring the opening correctly: net ≠ empty space
Some customers may confuse the dimensions of the opening (void to be filled) with the desired dimensions of the net.
You do not have the necessary elements to provide us with the exact net dimensions. The dimensions of your final net are the result of calculations made by our engineers, based on mesh stretch capacity and other various specific tests.
If you provide estimated net dimensions, this may result in:
- If too short: too tight, poorly tensioned, or impossible to fix properly
- If too large: excess net, awkward lacing, or uneven tension
Providing incorrect dimensions can compromise both the safety and aesthetics of your hammock-floor net.
In short, the opening must be measured accurately, without reductions: we will size the net according to your chosen configuration (mesh type, fixings, rope, orientation, etc.) so that it perfectly suits your needs.
Recommended steps for taking measurements
Here is how to proceed methodically :
1. Identify and outline the supporting structure
Identify all anchor points or the frame that will support the net (beams, walls, supports, etc.). This defines exactly where the net will be fixed and is the basis for the measurements.
If the existing structure is not wood, metal or concrete, or if one side is missing, a reinforcement or suitable frame must be added before sending your measurements.
If one side is missing, there are 2 possible options:
- 1. Option 1 : You build the missing structural elements (yourself or with a contractor).
- 2. Option 2 : We offer the Dyneema rope + tension turnbuckle pack. This kit includes all fixings and a Dyneema textile rope to replace one missing side (only one). This option applies only if the fixings of this solution can be anchored into structural material (wood, concrete, metal) at both ends.
2. Measure the opening according to its shape
Measurements must be provided in millimetres or inches:
- Simple shapes like rectangles or squares: measure length and width.
- Simple shapes like triangles or right triangles: measure all three sides.
- For any type of quadrilateral (rectangular trapezoid, isosceles trapezoid, irregular quadrilateral): measure all sides and the diagonals.
- For complex shapes (more than 4 sides, rounded shapes…): provide a sketch or plan with measurements, photos of the structure, description… The more information we have, the better our recommendation.
For any shape, our experts are available at +33 (0)5 35 54 35 00 or contact@loftnets.com
3. Cut-outs: a specific case
Your net may require a cut-out (for example, to create an access hatch, allow a ladder to pass through, or accommodate a chimney flue).
In this case, as with complex shapes, please send us the details and dimensions of your project via our contact form, ticking the dedicated box and attaching a plan showing the position and size of the cut-out(s).
The shape of a cut-out corresponds to opening a part of the net (straight or curved) so it fits the space perfectly, without altering the rest of the shape. The dimensions provided must correspond to the chosen cut-out shape.
Best practices & common mistakes
| To do | To avoid |
| Measure the opening accurately and multiple times | Provide only one measurement point or an approximate estimate |
| Give the exact opening dimensions | Give estimated dimensions of the desired net |
| Provide a plan + photos + details | Submit a request with no details or attachments |
| Check the strength of the supporting structure before ordering | Order a net without verifying this key element |
| Select the correct shape in the configurator or contact LOFTNETS for irregular shapes | Choose a standard shape when the opening is atypical |
If you have any doubts (complex shape, cut-out, unusual support…), contact us: our team of experts will guide you and can recommend a professional if needed. We are available Monday to Friday, 9am–6pm (France time).
