To fit out an opening with a horizontal home net, two solutions are available: the net with lacing and the rope-free net. LOFTNETS helps you choose the finish best suited to your project.
- The net with lacing is the classic solution for maintaining perfect tension over time, producing a very flat net with a firm feel and a nautical style. Choose from 2 lacing styles: point-by-point lacing or criss cross lacing.
- The rope-free net is designed for easy, safe access for young children, a more enveloping seat and a clean-lined style.
Functional comparison
| Functional criteria | Net with lacing | Rope-free net |
|---|---|---|
| Type of project | Ideal for a made-to-measure result and a nautical finish | Ideal for a clean, rope-free result and a softer comfort |
| Installation principle | Net installed with peripheral lacing | Net installed with specific opening fasteners, without lacing |
| Ease of access | Lacing gap between the structure and the net (between 4 and 15 cm) | Continuity between the floor and the net, suited to young children |
| Net tension | Perfect tension, adjustable over time thanks to the lacing | Natural loosening over time |
| Recommended maximum surface | Versatile, depending on the project configuration | Surface limited to 8 m² |
| Installation | Technical installation, with adjustment of the tension ropes | Simplified installation with the net attached directly to the fasteners |
| Indoor / outdoor use | yes | yes |
| Online configurator | Suitable for any type of structure (wood, concrete, metal profile) | Suitable for wood structures |
| Special cases outside the configurator | Technical study required: missing edge, complex cut-outs, etc. | Technical study required: structure other than wood, lacing on one side only, missing edge |

The choice between the two systems mainly depends on the intended use. The rope-free net is particularly well suited to mezzanine installations or spaces requiring easy, safe access for young children, with simplified installation using opening fasteners. The net with lacing remains the most versatile solution, compatible with any type of structure and shape, including complex cut-outs.
Aesthetics and comfort comparison
| Aesthetics and comfort criteria | Net with lacing | Rope-free net |
|---|---|---|
| Visual result | Visible rope, airy effect, technical finish | The net sits flush against the wood structure, for a reassuring effect |
| Aesthetic | Traditional nautical spirit | Clean and minimalist |
| Feel in use | Firmer support, firm comfort, a more taut surface | Softer support, more enveloping comfort, cocooning effect |
| Behaviour in use | Reduced sag: between 10 and 25 cm, depending on the net’s dimensions | Noticeable sag: between 20 and 40 cm, depending on the net’s dimensions |
| Appearance at rest | A “flat” look | A “relaxed” look |

Beyond function, each net creates a different ambience. The net with lacing offers a taut result and a traditional nautical spirit, with a visible rope that adds to the style. Here, the criss cross lacing reduces the gap between the mesh and the frame. The rope-free net focuses on a clean aesthetic and a more enveloping comfort, for a relaxed seat close to the spirit of a hammock.
Technical characteristics comparison
| Technical characteristics | Net with lacing | Rope-free net |
|---|---|---|
| Fastening system | Tension rope, double or point-by-point lacing, with fasteners suited to the structure | Reinforced shackle eye plate fasteners for wood |
| Compatible structure | Any type: wood, concrete, metal tubing, beam | Wood structure only, with a thickness greater than 60 mm |
| Possible shapes | Any shape depending on configuration, complex cut-outs possible | Rectangle, square, right-angled trapezoid, simple cut-outs |
| Fastener finish | Raw stainless steel, black, white | Raw stainless steel, black or white |
| Fastener spacing | Max 120 mm | Max 120 mm |
| Maximum load | 120 kg/m² for a surface under 8 m²; 1 tonne for a surface over 8 m² | 120 kg/m² for a surface of up to 8 m² |

On the technical side, both nets share the same safety requirements: a 2-year warranty and a maximum load of 120 kg/m² on the surfaces concerned. The net with lacing adapts to all structures (wood, concrete, metal profile) and all shapes, while the rope-free net is designed specifically for a wood structure with a minimum thickness of 60 mm.
The net with lacing
The net with lacing is the historic solution for home nets. Designed like a catamaran net, it is attached to the structure using peripheral lacing — simple, double or point-by-point, depending on the project.
This system allows the tension to be adjusted both at installation and afterwards. The rope remains visible and contributes to the net's style, inspired by the nautical world.
Key points
- Tension lacing: allows the net's tension to be adjusted.
- Rigidity: a more taut, more stable net, with a firm feel.
- Nautical finish: a classic, technical and proven solution.
The rope-free net
The rope-free net is a horizontal home net without lacing. It is installed using specific opening fasteners, distributed around the structure. These shackle eye plates were sized and designed by LOFTNETS specifically for this use.
It naturally loosens by a few centimetres over time and forms a more hollowed-out seat with a softer feel, close to the spirit of a hammock.
Key points
- No lacing: a net set flush against the wood structure, for a minimalist result, with only the metal fastener between the net and the wooden frame.
- Softer comfort: the enveloping feel of a hammock, with a cocooning effect.
- Simplified installation: no peripheral rope, for easier installation.
At rest, the rope-free net may look more relaxed. In use, its sag (vertical deflection) is greater (up to 40 cm, depending on the net's dimensions). This behaviour is normal and is part of the product.
Which model should you choose?
Choose the net with lacing if you are looking for tension that can be adjusted over time, a nautical style and a more airy, floating feel, just like on a catamaran.
Choose the rope-free net if you prioritise safe access for young children, a clean look without lacing and a soft, cocooning feel whether sitting or lying down.
