LOFTNETS, a partner in carbon-free transport

Expert in catamaran nets, LOFTNETS manufactures highly resistant nets from its workshop in Bordeaux, France, to support heavy loads on the open seas and in all weathers.

The LOFTNETS teams therefore had no hesitation in responding to Grain de Sail's request to equip their new cargo sailboat, Grain de Sail II.

Entirely built in aluminum, Grain de Sail II is a pure sailing ship with 1500 m² of sails, capable of sailing from Saint-Malo (France) to New York in around 15 days. Thanks to its highly favorable sail-to-weight ratio, it can reach commercial speeds of up to 12 knots, while reducing carbon emissions by over 90% compared with a conventional ship on an equivalent route (according to ADEME benchmarks, the French Agency for Ecological Transition).

LOFTNETS enthusiastically supplied the crew with 3 Dyneema® mesh nets for the following locations: the 2 booms (foremast and mainmast) and the radar protection cage.

The nets provide the ship with optimum resistance to withstand the extreme sea conditions of the Atlantic. Grain de Sail II sails goods (wine, chocolate and coffee) between France and the United States in just 2 weeks, with a stopover in the West Indies to form a faster transatlantic loop than its predecessor Grain de Sail, 3 or 4 times a year.

At the helm is Captain Charlène Gicquel and her crew of 7 sailors.

The cargo sailboat, a project for the future of the planet

Grain de Sail II innovates in an attempt to respect planetary limits. It takes its environmental approach a step further, optimizing not only the carbon footprint of sailing with wind propulsion, but also on-board energy supply with renewable and/or low-carbon means.

LOFTNETS is proud to contribute to this adventure, which embodies a positive evolution towards a low-carbon maritime future. Through this type of project, it is possible to combine technical expertise, performance and environmental commitment in the field of maritime transport. This innovative project contributes to the transformation of the industry by offering an innovative solution to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transport.
